Technical Day

ur Merlot SA Technical Workshop and Annual AGM was hosted at the beautiful Lanzerac Hotel in Stellenbosch, fitting for a day dedicated to the beauty of Merlot.

The morning unfolded with steaming coffee and sweet treats before Karlin Nel (MC and Committee Member) welcomed everyone with heartfelt words. “Today is all about celebrating how far Merlot has come, discovering new insights and tasting how just beautifully this grape continues to evolve,” Karlin shared.

Matthew Copeland (Chairperson) opened the Annual General Meeting with reflections on the year’s achievements and milestones, setting the tone for an exciting day ahead.

The Technical Workshop followed with insightful presentations from experts in the field. Andrew De Groot (Fermentis) focused on the quest for fruity, velvety Merlot, while Dr Jeanne Brand (Stellenbosch University) shared fascinating insights and spotlight on International Merlot research.

The highlight of the day was a comparative tasting led by Bordeaux Oenologist & Winemaker, Pascal Chatonnet. Wines from 5 different regions were explored, from USA and Italy to Spain, France and of course South Africa, creating an extraordinary discussion on each wine’s style and terroir.

The day concluded with an informal tasting of the 2025 Top 10 Merlot winners accompanied by canapés, a perfect way to celebrate excellence in South African Merlot.
